Tamika Lamison Discusses Award-Winning Short Film ‘Superman Doesn’t Steal’
Tamika Lamison, hailing from the state of Virginia, has written, produced, directed, AND acted in the short film, ‘Superman Doesn’t Steal’ and has been working in the industry for years. She attended and graduated from The American University and Howard University. The film is based on true events and is a coming-of-age story, seen through the eyes of 8-year-old Harriet. She and her brother, Jackson are enamored with superheroes and the short film focuses on a particular incident that had an impact on, not only the siblings but the immediate family.
The film is set during the 1970s Atlanta Child Murders, and the experience the sister and brother went through caused them to question the meaning of heroes, villains, superman as well as themselves.
Her first screenplay, JAR BY THE DOOR, earned several awards including the Gordon Parks Indie Film Award as a Sundance Finalist. She received numerous other honors including the ABC/Walt Disney Fellowship in Screenwriting, the CBS Director’s Initiative, and AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women Fellowship.
Lamison has used her talents to produce/write/direct several award-winning shorts and features that have found distribution. She was a staff writer and producer on MONOGAMY. To give back the talented filmmaker created her own non-profit, Make A Film Foundation (MAFF). The foundation grants film wishes to children with serious or life-threatening medical conditions by teaming them with noted film industry who help them create short film legacies.
Through the foundation, she has produced 4 award-winning narrative shorts and over 100 short documentaries via MAFF. Lamison is also a part of the Rideback Rise Fellowship Circle and a finalist in Shondaland’s Director Mentoring Program.
Lamison has set herself up to continue her great work to better her art and to produce more work that will be a pleasure for her audience to view and enjoy. She plans to do more with her Make A Film Foundation to help children who may grimly look at life and show them that they can express their dreams when all hope may be lost.
