In the world of boxing, there has not been an undisputed welterweight champion since 2005 when Brooklyn’s own Zab Judah held that title. Now, this weekend in Las Vegas, there will be one!
According to Boardroom, this weekend, a fight scheduled between two undefeated fighters, Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford will bring the winner the belt of every sanctioned title in their weight class. On Saturday night July 29, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the fight will be aired live on Showtime Pay-Per-View. The winner of the fight will unite the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO championships.
This is the very first time in boxing history that all four major welterweight belts will be on the line.
The much-anticipated bout will bring in a substantial amount of money, not only for the arena, cable network, and promoters but the two welterweights are expected to take home a BIG chunk of money.
With the fight selling for $84.99 via pay-per-view on Showtime, and exorbitant prices for in-person seats, both fighters are looking to walk away with purses that will rival some countries’ annual budgets.
No figures have been revealed from either side but it’s been reported that both Spence and Crawford have a guaranteed payday with an eight-figure payout, at minimum.
The Sporting News has also reported that the figure above, which some have predicted to be at least $25 million for each, can be higher after counting the proceeds of the Pay-per-view numbers from Showtime.
There is reportedly a bidirectional rematch clause for the boxer who loses the fight that can be used 30 days after the match. That could bring in even more potential money for both Spence and Crawford.
Crawford had previously mentioned that representatives from two unnamed hedge funds offered guaranteed purses of $25 million for himself and Spence. Either way, win or lose, both fighters’ bank accounts will undoubtedly be winners!
