David Alan Grier: The Cultural Legend Who Still Has More to Offer

In his exclusive interview with The Quintessential Gentleman, Grier reflects on his illustrious career and the lessons learned from over 42 years in the entertainment industry. From his breakout moments on “In Living Color,” where he brought to life unforgettable characters such as Reverend Leon Lonnie Love, to his recent roles in films like “The Color Purple,” Grier’s versatility and passion for the craft are evident.

The 68-year-old star shares nostalgic memories from his early days in New York, before the digital age transformed Hollywood. “In the early 80s, every actor who came to New York had an answering service—this was before the beeper,” Grier recalls. “You would then get on a payphone and check in two or three times a day to your answering service, and some big Hollywood studio would call you and tell you about auditions and callbacks.”

Despite the rapid evolution of the entertainment landscape, Grier embraces the changes with enthusiasm. “Everything is all digital now,” he says. “The last show I produced, I was able to cast by looking online.”
