Pittsburgh Steelers Lose Top 2 Quarterbacks To New York Teams

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost its top two quarterbacks to two New York teams, even losing their third string quarterback to the Detroit Lions

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering this season without their top two quarterbacks from last season, as both passers have signed with New York teams over the past week.

According to Steelers Now, the Steelers will have a new starting quarterback again this upcoming season, as their No.1 starter from last season, Russell Wilson, has recently signed a contract with the New York Giants. This news comes after the No. 2 passer from the 2024-2025 team, Justin Fields, inked a deal with another New York franchise, the New York Jets. Even the third-string quarterback, Kyle Allen, won’t be playing for the Steelers this year as he signed a free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions.

This is the second straight season that the team will have a new starting quarterback.

Former Green Bay Packers signal caller, Aaron Rodgers, who spent the last two seasons with the Jets, has recently talked to the Steelers about joining the franchise, but it’s not a definitive situation yet (the free agent met with head coach, Mike Tomlin, general manager Omar Khan, team owner and president Art Rooney II and several coaches, including offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for six hours recently, according to ESPN). In the meantime, the team has brought back former backup Mason Rudolph while signing Skylar Thompson, who was recently on the Miami Dolphins team.

Then, there is the upcoming NFL Draft. While manemagment tries to hammer out the options for the next starting quarterback, the team has shown interest in potential late-round picks like  Jalen Milroe, who played at the University of Alabama, and Quinn Ewers, who was recently playing for the University of Texas after a stint with the Ohio State University football team.

Although head coach Mike Tomlin has been able to keep his streak of winning seasons intact at 18 and counting, he hasn’t had a steady option at the quarterback position since Ben Roethlisberger left the team in 2021.
