Syracuse Women’s Basketball Player Dyaisha Fair Eclipses Brittney Griner On NCAA All-Time Scoring List
Dyaisha Fair, who plays for the Syracuse University women’s basketball team, has just surpassed WNBA player Brittney Griner to move into fifth place on the all-time women’s NCAA career scoring list.
According to The Associated Press, Fair who entered the game needing only four points to overtake Griner on the top-five scoring list did so while beating Virginia in an 85-79 win on Sunday, Feb. 25. She took over Griner’s position in the second quarter. In scoring 23 points, she is now the fifth top-scoring women’s player in NCAA history. Griner had a total of 3,283 during her collegiate career at Baylor when she played there from 2009 through 2013. Fair needs 91 points to tie with the fourth-place leader, Jackie Stiles, who has a total of 3,393. Next up after Stiles is Kelsey Mitchell who has 3,402 points. The top two women scorers in NCAA history are Kelsey Plum (3,527) and Caitlin Clark (3,617).
Fair’s last regular season game with Syracuse is on Thursday, Feb. 29 against North Carolina State, then after that, the playoffs begin.
After the game, she spoke about reaching the feat as a young girl coming from Rochester.
“Coming from Rochester, it’s not the easiest place, you know, to get from, to get out of it,” Fair said. “To start from there and be able to prove everyone that doubted me before I got here, to prove them wrong and to get here, and be a part of the culture of what Coach Jack instills in her players has made me realize that over time … there’s always light on the other side, and that no matter what if you keep working, you’ll reach it.”
After the next game, she still has a chance to add to her total when the playoffs start. The Orange is ranked at number 17 and Fair will be able to add to her total during the ACC Tournament. Depending on how far they advance in that tournament, there is also the season-ending NCAA Tournament. So, scoring more than 100 points will get her to the number three spot.
