Bringing a raucous energy with him wherever he goes, Smokepurpp specializes in anarchic party rap. Injecting chaos into the buttoned-up world of high art, Smokepurpp shares “What I Please,” his new single. With a beat from Quadwoofer, OJ Finessey, Mike Hector & KBeaZy and a motor-mouthed guest verse from Denzel Curry, “What I Please” is a no-frills slapper with a declarative hook–an ode to doing and taking whatever you want without regard for consequences. In the video, Purpp and Curry crash an art gallery, delivering a dose of South Florida energy into the staid atmosphere, tearing art off the walls and spray-painting their own in the process. Directed by Unkle Luc (Future, Young Thug), the Complex-premiered video is the latest from Deadstar 2, Purpp’s December 2019 project.
“I met Denzel Curry at an underground show in Florida back in the day,” says Smokepurpp to Complex. “Pump, Ski, Yop [Yoppa Bam] were also there, and Denzel was there with X[xxtentacion]. The video was important to shoot because it’s one of my favorite songs on the album as well as us both being from the same part of Miami. It was also streaming well and the vision Unkle Luc had for the video really made it come to life. I also wanted to connect with Denzel aside from music.”
Executive produced by Mike Dean, who mixed the album and added his unique creative footprint to the project, Deadstar 2 is packed with sonic detail, but leaves enough space for Purpp to spin his witty bars into hard-hitting cadences. The new album features a series of buzzing singles, including the Lil Skies-featuring “Dirty Dirty,” chaotic lead single “Stevie” (1.5 million views), and “Audi II,” the sequel to Purpp’s GOLD-selling hit from the original Deadstar album. With additional guest appearances from Trippie Redd, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Pump, and Moneybagg Yo, and production from the likes of Murda Beatz, Ronny J, Go Grizzly, Apex Martin, and more, Deadstar 2 is the ultimate showcase yet for Purpp’s intergalactic appeal, equally suited to headphone listening and festival moshing.
Adds Smokepurpp, “”Upcoming in 2020, I’m looking forward to a Deadstar 2 tour I will announce soon, along with major festivals in the spring. I’m gonna release a project called Florida Jit soon and another album with some more amazing features that people might be surprised about. And I’m just staying busy.”
Deadstar 2 is available everywhere via Alamo Records/Interscope.
