Montana Of 300 can rap over any beat and make it his own, no matter how famous the original track. The Chicago rapper frequently treats his legion of fans to remixes of popular industry hits, including Dej Loaf‘s “Try Me,” Lil Herb’s “Chiraq,” OT Genasis’s “Coco“ and an epic 8-minute freestyle over the beats from “White Iverson” and “Milly Rock.” Today, the self-proclaimed Rap God releases his biggest remix yet when he sinks his teeth into “Panda,” the surprise number one Billboard hit by teenaged Brooklyn rapper Desiigner. Montana attacks the Menace-produced beat with fervor, foregoing Desiigner’s percussive triplet flow in favor of his own machine gun bursts of lyrical genius: “Dressed up in all black like a panther/ I’m creepin’ I’m crawlin’ tarantula/ Bandana my face on the flag/trappers singin’ the national anthem.”
As an independent artist who built one of the most dedicated hip-hop fanbases from the ground up, Montana of 300‘s hustle can’t be knocked. The “Panda” remix follows the Chicago heavy-hitter’s XXL-debuted visual for “Here Now,” an introspective cut that finds Montana of 300 conversing with his conscience. In his annotation of the “Here Now” lyrics on Genius, Montana of 300 explained, “You get to listen in to what’s going on in my own mind… it’s kinda like me giving myself advice.” The reflective artist has been cementing his place in the game with an impressive stream of original video singles and remix videos which have accumulated 160M+ YouTube views. “He is nothing if not versatile,” HotNewHipHop notes, while VIBE adds that “Montana rips relentless bars that separate him from his peers.” Montana of 300 previously released “WTS Now,” a track reflecting on the long journey he’s been on, from handing his CD’s out around Chicago to now having built a massive following as an independent hip-hop artist, as well as the sinister video for “Land Of The Dark,” premiered by Noisey alongside a lengthy interview.
Originally slated for release today, Montana Of 300’s latest album, Fire In The Church, a follow-up to his 2014 break-through project Cursed With a Blessing, drops in two weeks on May 20th.
