We were excited and dripping in anticipation before the return of Prince Akeem of Zamunda prior to the sequel of Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy being released last year on Amazon Prime. Now, another one of our favorite Murphy characters, Alex Foley, of Beverly Hills Cop fame is slated to premiere on a rival streaming platform, Netflix.
Beverly Hills Cops 4 is the latest entry into the popular movie franchise that is currently being filmed in Los Angeles. The movie franchise debuted in 1984 with a sequel released three years later in 1987. After a disappointing box office draw for the last Beverly Hills Cop in 1994, rumors of another movie being made had died.
The Beverly Hills Cop franchise has reportedly grossed $735.5 million worldwide. The latest installation will find Murphy returning to his starring role as Axel Foley, a street-smart Detroit cop who finds himself transplanted to the tony streets of Beverly Hills.
In 2013, BLACK ENTERPRISE reported that a pilot for a television series was done, but it wasn’t picked up although producers back then had hoped another network would do so. No one did.
Daily Mail reported that production has already started on the upcoming Netflix movie. Murphy was seen with his co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige while filming in downtown Los Angeles.
Returning to the movie will be John Ashton who had the role of John Taggart, as well as Judge Reinhold who played Billy Rosewood. They were the two Los Angeles detectives who “partnered” with Foley each time he ventured back to the confines of Beverly Hills. Paul Reiser is also back playing the character Jeffrey Friedman.
Netflix picked up the rights to make the next sequel to Beverly Hills Cop, with Murphy assuming the main role once again while Jerry Bruckheimer produces. Paramount negotiated a one-time license deal, with an option for a sequel, that gave the streaming giant the right to make the fourth installment in the film series. Paramount will retain rights to the underlying intellectual property and the first three movies.
The Saturday Night Live alum is keeping himself very busy. In July, it was announced, according to Deadline, that Murphy is filming a yuletide-themed film called Candy Cane Lane, directed by Reginald Hudlin.
