Sacramento Kings’ Demar DeRozan Is Still Friends With Drake Despite Appearing in Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ Video
The city of Compton entered the popular world once hip-hop recording artists, N.W.A. burst on the scene and many others have represented their hometown ever since. With Kendrick Lamar‘s most recent song and video, “Not Like Us” returning the spotlight on the California town, Sacramento Kings power forward, DeMar DeRozan was featured in the video and spoke about participating in it and also said, despite rooting for his hometown buddy, “Drake’s still my man.”
In an interview with The Sacramento Bee, the former Toronto Raptors player discussed the importance of how the song, video, and popup show Lamar did in California brought unity to Compton with gang members coming together instead of fighting.
After appearing on stage for Lamar’s Juneteenth concert at the Inglewood Forum and then being seen in the “Not Like Us” video, DeRozan points out the importance of so many people coming out to support Lamar, particularly, when so many people from the hood being on stage in unison and with other athletes and celebrities joining in, marked a celebratory event.
“It was fun to be a part of (‘Not Like Us’),” said DeRozan. “For that moment, it was so much bigger than what people look at it as a beef between (Lamar) and Drake. It brought our whole city together in a different type of light where there wasn’t no issues, no violence. Everybody was coming together in a peaceful manner and that was the beauty out of those moments.”
It wasn’t lost on any basketball and/or California fan that Lamar mentioned DeRozan in the Drake diss song.
“I’m glad DeRoz’ came home, y’all didn’t deserve him neither,” Lamar recited in his lyrics when referencing the NBA player.
But, DeRozan made sure to mention that he and Drake are still cool since the Canadian rapper was a mainstay at Raptor games when DeRozan played on the basketball team.
