Inside Tyler Perry Studios: Writer’s Room Secrets, Scriptwriting & Creative Leadership

Bryna Jean-Marie shares her experience working at Tyler Perry Studios and the road that led her into a professional television writer’s room

In this video clip with Bryna Jean-Marie (The Hip Hop Museum), Bryna shares her experience working at Tyler Perry Studios and the road that led her into a professional television writer’s room. She gives credit to Antoneta Haristen—her classmate from Howard University and “work angel,”—for opening the door to the opportunity.

Although Bryna entered the writers’ room with prior scriptwriting experience, including writing approximately 26 scripts for a television series, her Tyler Perry Studios role gave her a new perspective on the collaborative and managerial side of television production. Rather than serving as one of the primary writers, she helped manage the writers’ room: reviewing scripts, discussing story direction, helping writers determine whether episodes were on track, and ensuring deadlines and workflow stayed organized.

We find out during this discussion how a writer’s room can work. In Bryna’s experience, writers were assigned specific episodes, wrote independently, then returned to the group for review, discussion, and feedback. She explains that other writers’ rooms may be even more collaborative, with teams collectively revising dialogue, scenes, and character moments.

Bryna describes how actors can elevate a script by adding personality, ad-libs, and their own interpretation—often creating something even better than the writer originally imagined.
