Former Saturday Night Live regular and Hollywood movie star, Eddie Murphy is being bestowed with yet another award at the start of next year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association® (HFPA), the producers of the annual Golden Globe Awards have announced that six-time nominee and Golden Globe winner Eddie Murphy will be receiving the coveted Cecil B. deMille Award at next year’s 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

“We’re honored to present this year’s Cecil B. deMille Award to the iconic and highly esteemed Mr. Eddie Murphy,” said HFPA President, Helen Hoehne in a written statement. “We’re thrilled to be celebrating the lasting impact on film and television that his career – in front of and behind the camera – has had through the decades.”

The 2023 Golden Globe Awards Ceremony will take place next month on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023. The live awards show will air live from 5-8 p.m. PT and 8-11 p.m. ET on the NBC network as well as streaming service Peacock.

The Cecil B. deMille Award, is historically chosen by members on The Hollywood Foreign Press Association Board of Directors. This honor is typically given to the esteemed individual for their outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. Past recipients of the Cecil B. deMille Award have been the likes of Morgan Freeman, Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Jane Fonda, George Clooney, Robert De Niro, Audrey Hepburn, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Sophia Loren, Steven Spielberg,  Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, and a host of others in past years.

Variety reported that due to “concerns over diversity” last year by talent, media, and creatives, there wasn’t an award show aired on NBC. Because of the issues regarding the diversity concern, there was no Cecil B. deMille Award recipient due to the boycott by the aforementioned groups. Before the boycott, there were no Black members of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association which was the core of the issues that talent, media, and creatives had with the organization.
