Visual Artist Ayana Morris Brings “Don’t Touch My Hair” Art Exhibit to Miami’s Art Basel

Experience the Immersive Exploration of Black Hair at Red Dot Art Fair, December 4th–8th

Miami, FL – November 25, 2024 –  Multidisciplinary artist Ayana Morris is thrilled to announce the Miami debut of her critically acclaimed “Don’t Touch My Hair” exhibition and The Culture Parlor Lounge following its successful debut at Newark Arts Festival. The immersive experience will be showcased at the prestigious Red Dot Art Fair during Art Basel Week, December 4–8, 2024. The thought-provoking exhibition delves deep into the cultural, historical, and societal importance of Black hair, offering a compelling narrative that challenges perceptions, celebrates identity and resonates with audiences of all backgrounds.

Filmmaker and visionary Ayana Morris first unveiled this mobile art installation in October at Harriet Tubman Square in Newark, NJ. The exhibit captivated audiences with its bold commentary on Black hair, challenging societal norms and celebrating its beauty and resilience. Morris, also known for launching the first Black-owned drive-in theater, Newark Moonlight Cinema, and co-director of the Lauryn Hill produced “Why is We Americans?” continues to push creative boundaries with this one-of-a-kind exhibit.

The Miami installation of “Don’t Touch My Hair” promises to be equally transformative. Attendees will experience several moving images that delve into themes such as bondage, resistance, embrace, assimilation, and survival—each reflecting the multifaceted relationship Black women have with their hair. Paired with a poignant poem, the exhibit evokes both reflection and empowerment.

Highlights include:

  • Assimilation: A striking portrayal of a woman with straightened hair, symbolizing societal pressure to conform.
  • Survival: A powerful nod to the ingenuity of enslaved individuals who braided escape routes into their hair.
