Aries Spears Says He is ‘Almost Certain’ his ‘Tombstone Was Written’ After Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Was Filed

Comedian Aries Spears has gone on record to state that he believes his career is just about over.

The comedian is known for his many years on MADtv from 1997 to 2005, making him the second longest cast member to appear regularly on the show behind fellow comedian Michael McDonald. The past couple of weeks has him potentially at the lowest point of his career after two incidents that were reported recently.

Initially, he faced a backlash due to comments he made toward Lizzo when he effectively fat-shamed her unprovoked. After he made those statements that many found offensive when he appeared on The Art of Dialogue last month, his situation worsened when a lawsuit was filed against him and fellow comedian, Tiffany Haddish earlier this month.

The Los Angeles Times reported that a lawsuit was filed against the comedians in Los Angeles Superior Court in which the defendants, who were underaged at the time of the incidents were “groomed” and “molested” on two separate occurrences on video for two different comedy sketches.

He did respond to the allegations and the effects he anticipate it having on his career in show business on a podcast he does with Adam Steinberg. In the episode, titled Spears & Steinberg 395: Emails from Austin (Good Vibes, Tupac vs Jay-Z, Criticisms, Aries’s Body) that premiered several days ago, after reading an email his mother sent to him, he mentioned to Steinberg that he made a statement to Spears, “You’re still discovering who you are,” that mirrors a statement his mother told me in the email she sent to him, “You’re still evolving into your prime.”

He goes on to say, “I think that was interesting that you said it and my mother echoed it or better yet she said it and you echoed it. Because I just went, yeah, and I’m going to tell you something, as much I’m nervous, I already felt like my career was over before all this. I thought I was blackballed, and I felt like my s–t was over. But I always said I felt like I was one thing away from the turnaround, but now with this, I’m almost certain that tombstone was written.”

But, he also states that he will be ok because his mother believes so.

“Maybe this is me being naive. This is me being corny but from the day my mother had my back and groomed me into this thing called showbiz, I believed everything she said. I believed every word. I believe she’s the reason why I’m here. So if the woman’s body I came out of says I’m going to be all right. I’ll be all right.”
