Jennifer Hudson Discusses Raising her Son and him Always Being her Focus
Jennifer Hudson had some things to say in her exclusive interview with Real Simple regarding being a single mother and her thoughts about raising her son.
One of the many accomplishments she has garnered over the years included her singing at the White House for the very first Juneteenth celebration after the holiday was made a federal one. The importance of having her son witness the event, along with his cousins” and friends was just as important as him seeing his mother doing so.
“I want my son to be a part of those things—and his cousins and friends. Little David has a really big heart, and he always wants to include them. So I said, “I’ll sing, but I have to bring my boys.” And I told the guys, “When you all get old and you have children, you’re going to say, ‘I was there for the first Juneteenth.’” And to be able to sing for it—that’s something I will never forget.”
She also mentions that she is making sure he understands how society may look at him since he is a Black boy. With him sporting an afro, the world may see something different than what he is based on how may be viewed by some. She has to make sure that he is conscious about what is going on around him as well.
“My son goes to a predominantly white school, and he has giant hair, a whole afro. He loves to walk in there with the big old ’fro and the pick in his hair. And I’m like, “Do you realize the statement you’re making? Know that just wearing your hair like that is a statement alone.” He’s very rooted in who he is and OK with that. Being a mom of a Black son, you have to make him conscious of and aware of certain things—who he is within the world. And there’s so many layers he has to learn! But he’s at an age where he can fully understand it. And he’s so evolved beyond what I could ever imagine.”
She also brings attention to the fact that as a single mother dating, she has to be careful with who she brings around her son. IF she brings anyone around. But, she makes a point to state that her focus has been on her son and it should stay that way.
