Maybach Music Group/Atlantic recording artist Rockie Fresh makes his long awaited return with two eagerly awaited new tracks. First up, the Chicago-based rapper has teamed with ESPN to release an exclusive new track in celebration of this week’s 2016 NFL Draft. “Who Is He (And What Is He To You) (Feat. Chauncey Sherod)” – written and originally performed by the legendary Bill Withers – was produced by Sean C & LV (Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, The Roots) expressly for featured placement across ESPN’s 2016 NFL Draft coverage, airing live from Chicago on Thursday, April 28th at 8 pm ET and continuing through Saturday, April 30th (check local listings). “I’ve always been a huge ESPN and sports fan, especially football, so it was an honor to be asked to be a part of a song that was being used to capture this moment,” said Rockie Fresh. “Being from Chicago, it makes it even more special to be involved in something that is directly touching the city that raised me. Much love to all that will be drafted in this year’s draft…I look forward to watching y’all next year!” The new track will be featured in production elements for the draft, beginning Wednesday, April 27th.

“When we were looking for a song for this year’s NFL Draft, we came across the amazing ‘Who Is He (And What Is He To You)’ by Bill Withers,” said Kevin Wilson, Director, ESPN Music. “We felt those lyrics worked really well for our storylines. We knew that we wanted to do a new version for our shows and once Bill gave us his okay, we reached out to Rockie. Being from Chicago, we felt Rockie was a great connection to the draft and he did an amazing job laying his custom vocals on top of this version sung so well by Chauncey Sherod and produced by Sean C & LV.”
Rockie will continue this week’s explosive return with the release of “Call Me When It’s Over (Feat. Chris Brown)” – his first official single release in nearly three years. The track – featured on Rockie’s recently released comeback project, “THE NIGHT I WENT TO…” – arrives this Friday, April 29th at all DSPs and streaming services.
“THE NIGHT I WENT TO…” dropped in January 2016, the first of four projects honoring Rockie’s favorite American cities and since followed by “THE NIGHT I WENT TO… LOS ANGELES,” “THE NIGHT I WENT TO… CHICAGO,” and “THE NIGHT I WENT TO…NEW YORK.” The series sees Rockie collaborating with a number of fellow superstars including GRAMMY® Award-winning Atlantic recording artist Ed Sheeran, Chris Brown, BJ The Chicago Kid, Casey Veggies, and one and only Maybach Music Group founder Rick Ross as well as such studio specialists as Mike Daley & Mitchell Owens, Sevn Thomas, Zalezy, Hit-Boy, Chris Batson, Papi Beatz, and others.
“THE NIGHT I WENT TO…” has been accompanied by a number of official videos, including “Down To Roll” and “I Need.” Official audio streams, exclusive videos, and much more can be found now at Rockie’s official YouTube channel.
Rockie Fresh unleashed his debut mixtape in 2009 and was instantly acclaimed for an inventive and utterly unique approach melding alternative and electronic influences with deep urban undertones. “ROCKIE’S MODERN LIFE” was fast followed in 2010 by two further mixtapes, “THE OTHERSIDE” and “DRIVING 88,” the latter hailed by Complex as “sure to establish Rockie as a force to be reckoned with.”
Rockie joined forces with Rick Ross and Maybach Music Group label in 2012 and quickly released a trio of additional mixtapes, “ELECTRIC HIGHWAY,” “THE BIRTHDAY TAPE,” and, “MIXED VEGGIES” (with Casey Veggies). What’s more, his “What Ya Used To (Feat. Hit-Boy)” proved a highlight of “SELF MADE 3,” the third groundbreaking installment in Maybach Music Group and Atlantic Records’ hugely successful “SELF MADE” compilation series. The star-studded collection continued the tradition laid down by its two predecessors with a top 5 chart debut, entering the SoundScan/Billboard 200 at an explosive #4 upon its September 2013 release. Moreover, “SELF MADE 3” made hip-hop history by threepeating at #1 atop Billboard’s “Top Rap Albums” ranking.
