Former NBA Champion Rick Fox Announces Entry Into Politics For Home Country, The Bahamas

Former NBA player and actor Rick Fox has announced his intention to run for political office in the Bahamas, where the Canadian-born former basketball player was raised.

The former Los Angeles Lakers took to his Facebook page to proclaim that he “will be a candidate in the next general election” for the Caribbean island. In the post, he stated that he has been listening to Bahamians, understands the frustrations they have been expressing, and wants to be the change they are looking for.

“For months, I’ve been listening closely to the hopes and frustrations of my fellow Bahamians. One truth is clear: the future of The Bahamas will depend on the choices we make right now.

“You’ve shared that you want more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is our reality, not just a promise.

“I share that vision.

“And I’m stepping forward today because we cannot wait any longer to realize a Bahamas that we all envision is possible.”

The announcement was met with some enthusiasm from others who feel he may be the spark needed to bring the kind of good fortune the people on the island are seeking.

According to CBS Sports, the 56-year-old was raised in the Bahamas before moving to the United States to attend high school in Indiana. After playing his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina, he was selected in the first round of the 1991 NBA Draft, No. 24, by the Boston Celtics. After playing for the team for six seasons, he signed as a free agent to the franchise’s nemesis and long-term rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.

Fox would go on to win three championships, playing alongside Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and others as the franchise won three straight titles (2000-2002), before retiring after seven years with the Lakers.

He then began acting, appearing in several television shows, including “Ugly Betty,” “Greenleaf,” “The Game,” and “One Tree Hill,” as well as making numerous guest appearances on other shows.

Fox has been the Ambassador-at-large for Sports for the Bahamas since 2022.
