BOMESI marks 6th anniversary on June 20, advancing equity for diverse-owned media
Since its founding, the nonprofit has grown into a national network of 300+ Black-owned and 2,500 diverse-owned publishers reaching 90 million households monthly.
New York, N.Y., (June 19, 2026) — BOMESI marked its sixth anniversary on June 20, a date intentionally tied to the spirit of Juneteenth and the organization’s founding mission: ensuring diverse-owned media businesses achieve the economic equity and long-term sustainability they deserve.
Since founders DéVon Christopher Johnson and Rhonesha Byng launched the organization, BOMESI Foundation has grown into a national force, uniting publishers, redistributing advertising dollars, and equipping diverse media owners with the tools and resources to thrive. The organization now connects more than 300 Black-owned and 2,500 diverse-owned publishers into a unified network reaching 90 million households monthly.
“Six years ago, we set out to change the economics of media for diverse publishers, and we’re just getting started,” said DéVon Christopher Johnson, Chairman and CEO of BOMESI Foundation. “Juneteenth reminds us why this work matters, freedom is incomplete without economic opportunity, and diverse voices in the media must have both.”
BOMESI has built impact across three core pillars: Ecosystem, uniting diverse-owned publishers into a powerhouse coalition; Education, providing access to advertising technologies, training, and communications resources; and Economic Empowerment, actively redistributing ad dollars to inclusive media and advocating for equitable spend.
“We needed to be united as one voice versus individually trying to fight for a small slice of the pie,” said Rhonesha Byng, Co-Founder and Chief Mission Officer of BOMESI. “We want this moment to become a movement.”
