The Little Black Book of Success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women

Although statistics show that more and more African American are achieving success, similar studies also indicate that most of these women are reaching their goals at a tremendous cost in   other areas of their lives. Because Black women very often lack the guidance and support resources to assist them up the ladder their journey’s are often marked by deep frustrations and pain. In the new book, “The Little Black Book of Success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women,” three successful businesswomen – Elaine Meryl Brown, Marsha Haygood and Rhonda Joy McLean share the value of their experiences of building thriving careers and offer invaluable  mentorship to sisters everywhere.

I recently had the great pleasure to interview these three fabulous women so that they coud share their pearls of wisdom with the readers of the Robertson Treatment. Enjoy!

(Bringing Up Boogie) Bump the Baby Talk... Mommy Needs Quiet!

carpool-chatterbox-200x200.jpgWhen Boogie was born, I forbade (yes, FORBADE) anyone from speaking to him in baby talk. I told anyone that would listen that I wanted him to develop language and communication skills and speaking to him in baby talk would stunt his development. I had no data to back this up. I just told them I heard it on Oprah and everyone fell in line.

The truth is, I find baby talk annoying. It’s just annoying. My son is a human being; why are you talking to him like he’s a puppy? And I’m just not capable of all that cooing and “Who’s mama’s sweet baby? Who’s mama’s big boy?” I would ignore myself if I spoke like that. So from day one, whenever I was with Boogie, changing his diaper or feeding him or just holding him, I would talk to him. Not about anything specific, I would just say whatever was on my mind.

We talked a lot about Britney Spears.

Have Men Lost All Respect For Women?

I was searching the Internet the other day and came across something pretty disturbing.

Over the years, I’ve heard various women talk about the fears they have walking the streets, especially when approaching a group of men. Having friends that’ve been raped and/or assaulted, I understand where that fear comes from but, as a man, I’ll never know what it’s like to be a woman. Still, I’d have to be a heartless brute to not be disturbed by what I saw in the following video clip.

What A Man's Gotta Do

Sometimes you just have to go there...

A person can only be pushed—but so far! Maybe you have never been there so it might be hard for you to relate. But for those who have been faced with having to endure the kind of injustice that just doesn’t make any sense, this one is definitely for you.

If you’ve ever found yourself in the unenviable position of having to take the kind of stand that could severely compromise your personal well being, then we’re definitely on the same page. But, if you cringe at the prospect of confronting the establishment in a noble attempt to take back what is rightfully yours, then we probably aren’t riding the same wavelength.

Either way ...

It was a rare and exceptional moment when the perfect opportunity met with my gnawing obsession to finally dispense justice. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Why Black Folk Will Always be Broke

http://rawdawgb.blogspot.com/2010/09/why-black-folk-will-always-be-broke.html

In these times of economic turmoil and instability, many are tightening their purse strings across the nation. However, a large segment of the population continues to spend and live above their means — African Americans.

The simple fact is that African Americans do not save money and tend to spend before even considering putting a few coins away. The average African American’s savings level is about 1 percent of annual income when compared to other ethnic groups. This represents the percentage of disposable personal income held in retirement plans and liquid financial assets.

This is strange given the massive spending power that we have as a collective. African Americans spent $645.9 billion in 2002, an increase of 104 percent from 1990, according to
Target Market News, a consumer market research and information company. In 2004, blacks' spending power increased to $723 billion, according to U.S. consumer market data, and is currently estimated to be $913 billion.
